Added 17/2/24:

* Gungahlin Weather Centre records 34.6mm in an hour this evening.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded 34.6mm in around an hour this evening as a line of thunderstorms crossed the region from the East.  The rain started at 6.30pm and, at one stage, was falling at a rate of 79.0mm/hr.  This fall brings the total so far recorded at Gungahlin in 2024 to 176.8mm.

Added 13/1/24:

* Gungahlin Weather Centre records 32.8mm during this afternoons thunderstorm.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded 32.8mm in 90 minutes during this afternoon's thunderstorm (13 January 2024).  The storm hit a 4pm.  Hail was also recorded in some Gungahlin suburbs (including Palmerston and Ngunnawal).  Gungahlin has now recorded 54.2mm so far this year.  In comparison, January 2024 saw only 43.2mm fall all month.

* Gungahlin Weather Summary - 2023.


​

The average maximum temperature recorded at the Gungahlin Weather Centre during 2023 was 20.2°C, while nights averaged at 7.4°C.

Rainfall totaled 491.2mm, with some rain recorded on 130 days.  December was the wettest month (102.2mm) and July the driest (11.4mm).

The hottest day of the year was 36.4°C (19 March) and the coldest day was 6.7°C (28 June).

The coldest night was -6.2°C (21 June) and the warmest night 17.7°C (12 December).

The temperature rose above 30°C on 36 days during the year and fell below 0°C on 40 nights.

There were 22 fogs and 74 frosts.

Gungahlin received no snow falls during 2023.

2023 Gungahlin Weather Records:

April: 91.6mm of rain recorded at Gungahlin Weather Centre (previous record 82.2mm in April 2000).

21st June: Gungahlin Weather Centre records a minimum of -6.2°C.  Previous low -5.7°C, recorded on 15 June 2006.

Added 3/1/23:

* Gungahlin Weather Centre records its wettest year in 2022.


​

Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded over 800mm of rain in a year for just the second time since it began recording rainfall back in 1998.  In fact, the 831.0mm that fell during 2022 was the most rain to fall in a year, beating the previous record of 820.4mm in 2016.

October saw the most rain (188.8mm) which was also a record for that month, while August saw 116.4mm and January 91.2mm.  June was the driest month, with only 20.4mm of rain falling.

Rain was recorded on 161 days during 2022.

Added 15/12/22:

* New December minimum temperature record at Gungahlin Weather Centre on 15th.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded a minimum of 1.6°C this morning, a new record low for December.  It beats the previous record low of 2.7°C in 2011.  Several suburbs recorded a light frost.

Added 8/2/22:

* A wet start to 2022.


Gungahlin recorded 91.2mm of rain during January 2022, making it the wettest start to a year since 2016 (94.6mm) and the 4th wettest January since records began at the Gungahlin Weather Centre back in 1999.

The wettest January in Gungahlin occurred in 1999, when 110.4mm of rain fell.

Gungahlins longer term January average rainfall is 44.7mm.

Added 26/1/22:

* Gungahlin records its 3rd wettest year on record in 2021.

​

Gungahlin received 772.2mm of rain during 2021.  This was the third wettest year in Gungahlin.  Only 1999 (776.0mm) and 2016 (820.4mm) have been wetter since records began at the Gungahlin Weather Centre in 1999.

* Gungahlin records no wind for 43 hours!


If you were trying to fly a kite between February 13 and 15, 2020 you would have struggled.
From 8pm on 13 February 2020 until 4pm on 15 February 2020, Gungahlin Weather Centre did not record a single breath of wind. That's 43 hours straight without any wind.


* Gungahlin swelters through its warmest night.


If you thought it was hard to sleep last night (1 February 2020) there was probably a good reason. Gungahlin recorded a minimum temp of 30.0°C this morning, shortly after 5am. This smashed the previous record warm night of 25.2°C on 8 January 2013.


* Gungahlin records its' hottest day.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded a maximum of 43.7°C at 3.16pm today (4/1/2020). This made it the hottest day ever recorded at the Gungahlin Weather Centre, and beats the previous record of 43.0°C on 16/1/2019.


* Gungahlin records its' driest December and driest year.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded just 2.2mm of rain during December 2019. This beats the previous low of 8.0mm, recorded in December 1998.
Just 308.6mm of rain fell for the whole of 2019, making it the driest year recorded at the Gunaghlin Weather Centre since recods began in 1997. The previous driest year was in 2006, when Gungahlin received 366.8mm.


* New April maximum temperature record for Gungahlin.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded a maximum of 31.4°C at 2.55pm today (11/4/18). This made it the hottest April day recorded at the Gungahlin Weather Centre, beating the previous April record of 29.8°C on 15/4/2004.


New January maximum temperature record for Gungahlin.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded a maximum of 41.9°C at 3.15pm today (7/1/18). This made it the hottest January day recorded at the Gungahlin Weather Centre, beating the previous January record of 41.7°C on 16/1/14. Gungahlin's hottest day remains 42.3°C (11/2/17).


New low December maximum temperature record for Gungahlin.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded a maximum of just 12.5°C at 9.21am today (4/12/2017). This made it the coldest December day recorded at the Gungahlin Weather Centre, beating the previous record of 14.2°C on 12/12/2008.


* New September maximum temperature record for Gungahlin.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded a maximum of 28.8°C at 2.43pm this afternoon (23/9/2017). This made it the hottest September day recorded at the Gungahlin Weather Centre, beating the previous record of 26.0°C on 30/9/2001.


* Large snow flakes fall across Gungahlin.


Gungahlin residents were treated to a wintry surprise this afternoon (27/8/17) with earlier morning rain turning to sleet around 2pm. With the temperature dropping to just 0.7°C at 2.15pm, large snow flakes fell for around 15 minutes. Unfortunately, just as the snow started to settle on gardens, cars and decks it tapered off to just a few flurries.
The temperature range in Gungahlin today was a cold -0.4°C to 7.3°C and there was 4.4mm of rain/snow. For the record, some snow has now fallen in 5 of the last 6 winters in Gungahlin.


* New minimum temperature record at Gungahlin Weather Centre.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded a minimum of -7.1°C at 7.38am this morning (2/7/2017). This made it the coldest morning recorded at the Gungahlin Weather Centre, beating the previous record of -6.6°C on 2/8/2003.


* New maximum temperature record at Gungahlin Weather Centre.


Gungahlin Weather Centre recorded a maximum of 42.3°C at 2.17pm today (11/2/2017). This made it the hottest day recorded at the Gungahlin Weather Centre, beating the previous record of 41.7°C on 16/2/2014. See Gungahlin's hourly temperatures on 11/2/17.


* January 2017 was Gungahlins hottest!


The average maximum temperature in Gungahlin during January 2017 was 32.4°C. This made it the hottest January (during the day) since records began at the Gungahlin Weather Centre back in 1999. The previous record was 32.0°C in January 2013. The maximum temperature reached 30°C or above on 24 days during January 2017, with a peak of 39.6°C on January 30.


* Rainfall records tumble during Gungahlins wettest year!


Gungahlin recorded 820.4mm of rain in 2016, 44.4mm more than in the previous wettest year (1999), when 776.0mm was recorded.
New monthly records were recorded in May: 69.8mm (previous 62.6mm in 2000), June: 135.0mm (previous 129.6mm in 1998), July: 100.2mm (previous 93.0mm in 1998) and September: 135.4mm (previous 103.9mm in 2005).


* Warm nights in 2016!


Two new warmest minimum records were set during 2016.
On April 6, the minimum was a balmy 18.2°C, beating the previous record of 15.8°C on 3 April, 2005. While on July 19, the minimum was a very un-wintery 11.6°C, well above the previous record of 9.5°C, set on 30 July, 2014.


* Gungahlin max temp record beaten - twice!


Just a year after reaching 40.5°C, and creating a new max temp record for Gungahlin, the record has been broken - twice!
On January 16, 2014 the maximum reached 41.7°C (now the new hottest max temp recorded in Gungahlin), while on the following day (Jan 17) it peaked at 40.7°C.


* Gungahlin swelters through its hottest day on record.


The maximum temperature reached 40.5°C on January 18, 2013. This is the hottest temperature recorded at the Gungahlin Weather Centre since records began in 1998.


* Gungahlin records its coolest start to summer on record.


Weather conditions across Gungahlin during December were considerably cooler and cloudier than normal. In fact, with a mean temperature of just 16.3°C, it was easily the coldest start to a summer recorded in Gungahlin since the Gungahlin Weather Centre opened back in 1999. Read more


* Gungahlin records its hottest Australia Day - 26 January 2011.


The mercury peaked at 37.1°C at 4.18pm today, making it the hottest Australia Day in Gungahlin since records began at the Weather Centre in 1998. Read more


* Gungahlin receives a wintry surprise - October 2010 snow falls.


Gungahlin residents woke to a surprise this morning with snow flurries falling across the suburbs between 7am and 8.45am. Read more


* Gungahlin shivers through its coldest day on record.


Gungahlin shivered through its coldest day since the Gungahlin Weather Station opened in January 1998. The maximum temperature on 12 June 2009 was just 2.6°C (recorded at 3.17pm), beating the previous coldest day of 3.0°C recorded on the very snowy day of 28 May 2000. Read more
