Rain brings relief in WA.

16 April 2007

Torrential rain in Western Australia has brought relief to farmers in the state's south.  Perth received its normal April rainfall in just one day.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the metropolitan area received its heaviest daily rainfall since June 2005 after the downpour began yesterday afternoon.  The bureau says in the last 24 hours the metropolitan area received 40.2 millimetres, just under the monthly average.

The president of the West Australian Farmers Federation, Trevor De Landgrafft, says the rain extended into the south-west and Great Southern.  "Having a break to the season or good rains was most welcome," he said.  "It is highly likely the follow up showers that are going to occur over the next few days will assist in getting good germination of pastures throughout the south-west."

The bureau predicts more showers this morning with another front expected tomorrow.  However bureau forecaster, Rabbi Rivett, says the front is unlikely to bring a repeat of yesterday's heavy downpour.  "Basically we're stating to see fronts come further north and this happened to be a particularly strong front, so yeah its typically something you would more associate with winter," he said.
