Victoria farmers celebrate heaviest rain in months.

28 April 2007

Victorian farmers say their prayers have been answered with heavy rain falling across most of the state.  The highest falls have been recorded in the Grampians, which received 60 millimetres overnight.  Horsham recorded 40 millimetres and there were 10 millimetres in Melbourne.

More rain is expected and the Victorian Farmers Federation's (VFF) Geoff Nalder says it is the perfect time for the state's grain growers.  "The quantities that have fallen, from my information, have been anywhere from 25 millimetres up to 60 or 70, which is, I would classify as the break in the season," he said.

The rain has come at the perfrct time for VIC grain growers.

"It's time to start sowing, the grounds nice and warm, we've got a good amount of moisture in the ground now.  "There's plenty of room for more, but this is the one that we've been waiting for and there'll be a few long nights on tractors for farmers from now on.  "It's been a long time from where I come from, we haven't had any rain since the 15th of January this year, we were starting to wonder whether it could rain again.  "Now that we've had such significant falls across the state, it just makes everybody step a little bit higher and think that there is light at the end of the tunnel."
