Tsunami forecasting needed now.
3 April 2007

Queensland's Premier says it is not good enough that more accurate forecasting
about tsunamis is still two years away. Peter Beattie has been critical of
the lack of information available immediately after the weather bureau issued
its tsunami warning yesterday.
The bureau says it should be able to predict by the end of this year where a
tsunami will strike, but computer models forecasting the strength of a tsunami
are about two years away. Mr Beattie says he has written to the Prime
Minister. "This is life threatening and why should we possibly put people's
lives at risk for another two years? That is not good enough," Mr Beattie said.
"If we try and run away and congratulate ourselves rather than facing up to the
problem then we do our people of Australia a great disservice, and two years is
two years too long."
