River alliance welcomes early snow
11 June 2007
The Snowy River Alliance says the early snow falls so far this season
are a good sign for the health of the river.
Alliance spokesman John Gallard says heavy snowfalls are vital for the
mountains, as they help contribute to sustained water flows into the
spring and summer. Mr Gallard says the first snow falls have
been progressively arriving later in New South Wales, and last year
was the worst snow season for 20 years.
He says
it is a little too early to determine whether the snow patterns have
returned to normal. "Very seldom was there ever snow for the
long weekend in June," he said. "Now we've had two, two winters
in a row, where we've had snowfalls before the long weekend in June.
"All we can do is hope that this one's not the same as what happened
last year." |
