Councils look to staging cloud seeding conference.8 May 2007Western New South Wales' Parkes and Gilgandra shire councils are hoping to organise a cloud seeding conference similar to one being held in Melbourne this week. World weather experts are in Melbourne to review the latest research into cloud seeding, which is used to increase snow or rainfall. Parkes' Mayor Robert Wilson says once the Melbourne conference ends, the council will contact some of the representatives involved to try to organise a local gathering. "We will have the key personnel, particularly there's a professor from Monash University along with John Forrest who is the federal Member for the Mallee in Victoria, we will try and secure those people to come up and talk so that we can then actually lobby the Government to put some money towards a cloud seeding project," he said. Councillor Wilson wants to have the conference organised before the federal election so it can campaign for a large scale cloud seeding project. "I think that it's paramount that if we're involved and if ... global warming is a response of human activity then I think that we've got to use every scientific method that we have at our disposal to overcome some of those difficulties," he said.
