The greatest flood
in the upper Murrumbidgee occurred on this day (May 27) in 1925.
The area around
Canberra, north from Cooma, received record rains in early May that year but on
the night of May 26 and morning of May 27, the falls were unprecedented before
or since.
Belconnen (in the
Canberra area) had 161mm to 9am on May 27. Bungendore had 152mm (after a record
121mm just two weeks earlier) and Queanbeyan 189mm, almost double any other
daily fall in the past 100 years.
Falls of over 100mm
fell as war west as Burrinjuck Dam.
In the space of
three weeks the upper Murrumbidgee received more rain than it has had in whole
years in recent times.
