Canberra suffers storm damage.

30 May 2007

A storm last night caused widespread minor damage around the ACT but also brought welcome rain.

The weather bureau says 18 millimetres fell in the catchment area, up to nine millimetres were officially recorded in Canberra but Goulburn received less than five millimetres of rain.

Wind gusts of up to 80 kilometres an hour loosened tiles and brought trees down.

Emergency Services Agency spokesman Darren Catrupi said there were no reports of injury or major damage though a two storey house in Kaleen was struck by a falling tree.  "It just caused a lot of damage around the eaves and that sort of area of on the second floor," he said.  "But it actually landed on top of the living room area so the home owners, it caused a bit of a fright but luckily it didn't penetrate the building itself."
