Early snow falls raise hopes of a bumper 2010 ski season.

12 June 2010.

The 2010 ski season officially got underway under mostly clear skies on Saturday, 12 June.  Right on cue, a vigorous cold front hit the region on Wednesday (9 June) dumping between 5 and 10cm of snow across the NSW Alps.  Falls in the Victorian resorts were a little heavier, with reports of up to 15cm of snow.  Temperature ranges on 9 June were: Selwyn Snowfields: -2.2°C to -1.2°C, Crackenback (Thredbo) -5.6°C to -3.9°C and Perisher Valley: -4.0°C to -2.0°C.  The cold outbreak wasn't confined to the mountains, with Gungahlin's temperature range on June 9 a cold 0.8°C to 4.8°C.

The cold conditions allowed the snow guns to supplement the natural falls and in Perisher, there was enough snow on the slopes for the resort to open a couple of lifts a day before the official opening.

The 2010 ski season ends on the October long weekend.  Although it's too early to accurately predict how much snow will fall this winter, with the demise of the El Nino weather phenomenon over autumn, and forecasts of a wetter than normal July and August, things are looking positive.  It's also likely that at least one substantial snow fall should hit Gungahlin before the winters over - lets hope so!

In contrast, on 7 June (the official start to the 2008 season) no natural snow was recorded on the ground anywhere in the mountains, and even the top of Mt. Kosciuszko was bare of snow.
